Trainer Bio

Meet Helen

  • Ten years experience in rehabilitating dogs
  • Provides training advice to a number of rescue groups
  • Trained Dog Listener
  • Provides workshops and training to the public in dog behaviour
  • Served on City of Ryde Companion Animals Committee

I have always been an animal lover and had pets of all kinds. My latest journey with dogs started in January 2005 when I rescued “My Wee Mate” Charlie, a maltese cross from DoggieRescue.com.

My dog Charlie arrived with a number of behavioural issues including lunging and barking at any passers by on the lead, nipping during grooming, barking incessantly at any males within 10 metres and being able to escape from pretty much anywhere to try to find me. My determination to help him resolve these issues led me to investigate many techniques and dog training methods. One of these was Jan Fennell’s. Over a number of years I became accredited and used her methods more and more. I really like Jan’s methods because:

  • They are completely positive and there is no cruelty, fear or force
  • No cruel gadgets such as choke chains or electric shock collars are used
  • They work!

I also foster rescue dogs and assist a number of rescues with training advice. I have successfully rehabilitated numerous dogs using Jan’s methods.

Testimonials

“Helen came out for our first home visit and observed Neelah and explained the reasons behind Neelah's actions which has helped us to understand her behaviour more, she is not acting this way out of malice or spite she is actually very fearful and she thought it was her job and responsibility to protect me and the house all the time. Helen began to teach us how we can help Neelah to become a calmer dog and set us up with several steps to follow over the next few weeks.”

“Myself and my wife would have absolutely no hesitations in recommending Helen's expertise if you suffer from the ‘naughty dog’ syndrome. Our dog Poppet, is a totally different animal. Calm and obedient are definitely 2 words I would use. Helen explained her behaviours in a rational and logical sense and also provided go forward instructions. It will be the best decision you will ever make regarding your dog.”

Rebecca and Paul, Epping NSW

"Delilah's always been a bit of a skittish girl, and I think our frequent relocations for my work (including overseas!) hasn't helped this much. About 6 months ago she started acting up, and bit someone on the street, in what I interpreted as a completely unprovoked manner. Beside myself with worry, I called on CalmaDog. They've allowed me to see the world through a dog's eyes, and in a manner of weeks Delilah turned from a barking, lead-pulling, protective dog to a calm, relaxed, and importantly, much happier, pooch. Thanks so much for all your help Adele!"

Dr K van Ekert Onay, Veterinarian

"I feel like I did all three hounds (and any human visitors who had to put up with their anxious behaviour) a disservice up to the time we started using the CalmaDog techniques. Sparkle seemed very much in charge and would repeatedly jump up at me every time I arrived then she would attack Foxy Lady if she tried to get near me. And Slim Shady, my boy, would whine wildly. It took a long time for them to calm down on my arrivals. I had no idea this was high anxiety displayed by all of them. Sparkle would also randomly attack Foxy Lady throughout the day,if I tried to intervene it would get worse.

Sparkle would often bark the whole night too. Things improved once I watched The Dog Listener DVD but it wasn't until I had an actual consult in which Adele could watch me interact with my pack, giving me constant correction, that things really started falling into place. I had to change years of conditioning of how I relate to dogs. Now, when I do the correct behaviour, they do not jump on me when I arrive back home and after a quick sniff, they all give me my space – amazing!

My friends are in awe of this amazing development as Sparkle's reputation reaches far. And now, when I hear people talk about their "problem" dogs and I see them interact with them, I always suggest getting the same help I received. And it is almost amusing to see how stuck in their ways people are, because they grew up with dogs or had dogs all their lives they presume they know what is best, I was one of those but I clearly didn't know best.

Like I said, almost amusing but it is the dogs that are suffering, that get labelled as a problem animal, and get subjected to extreme behavioural remedies, and/or sent to fill up a rescue home. The gratitude I have towards Adele and the behavioural techniques that she taught me is huge - thank you so much for making my life easier & my hounds happier!"

Common Myths

Aggressive dogs can't be rehabilitated

Many trainers you contact about an aggressive dog will not call you back. Either that or they will tell you to rehome the dog or euthanase. This is because they have no strategy to deal with aggression. Dogs are not aggressive by nature and if you understand what is causing aggression in a situation it can be addressed and turned around.

Rub their nose in it

I can't believe there are still people who will tell you to do this if your dog does their business in the house. Positive toilet training techniques work. If your dog is toilet trained and still messing in the house there is a physical or behavioural reason. For example, dogs that soil in the house when you go out are actually trying to make sure you know where to come home to! Once the separation anxiety issue is sorted the soiling will stop.

You must walk your dog at least once or twice daily otherwise you are a bad dog owner

This is usually because a well meaning person has told them that this will resolve behaviour issues. Unfortunately it rarely helps. And even if it solves one issue, others could surface.

Your dog is bored

And that is why it chews/barks etc. Destructive behaviour and problem barking is usually caused by anxiety. It can also happen because these behaviours have been accidentally reinforced. Have you left a toy or treat for your dog while you are at work only to find it saves it till you get home?

Dogs should stay in the back yard

Dogs are by nature pack animals. Keeping a lone dog in your back yard goes against their nature. I believe its cruel. If you don't intend to let your dog be part of your pack then it's best not to have one. Yes a dog can survive outside in the cold or a heatwave and surrounded by flies, mosquitoes etc. So could you. But you choose not to.

Get another dog

If you have behavioural issues with your dog its always best to resolve these before bringing another pack member in. This could just mean double trouble!

My Wee Mate Charlie

The work we do with dogs is dedicated to the memory of Charlie who entered Helen’s life on 29 January 2005 and passed over on 21 June 2008.

I Call You Dog

When God made the earth and sky, flowers and the trees, He then made all the animals, the birds and the bees.

When His work was finished, not one was quite the same. He said, "I'll walk this earth of mine and give you all a name."

And so He travelled land and sea, and everywhere He went, a little creature followed him until its strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth and in the sky and sea, the little creature said, "Dear Lord, there's not one left for me."

The Father smiled and softly said, "I've left you till the end, I'll turn my own name back to front, and call you 'dog,' my friend."
